For those in North America and Europe, 2023 will likely be remembered as the year when the effects of climate change could no longer be ignored. Independent analyses from the U.S. National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and E.U.’s Copernicus Climate Change Service confirmed recently that June 2023 was the hottest June on record. And preliminary data suggests that July will likely be even hotter.
As multiple waves of extreme temperatures are shattering decades-old records, crippling infrastructure, and creating public health emergencies, they are also focusing renewed attention on the risks of occupational heat exposure. But for many employers unaccustomed to dealing with extreme heat, it’s often difficult to understand what measures need to be in place to adequately protect their workforce, and limit business disruption.
